Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and the Thar Desert

Jaisalmer is the best place to visit in Rajasthan, much better than the other tourist hot-spots of Jaipur and Pushkar. Jaisalmer was an important trading centre because of it's strategic location on the ancient camel trade routes linking India with the middle east, Egypt, Africa and Europe. During the 19th century, rich merchants built exquisite, intricately carved, mansion houses (havelis) using golden-yellow sandstone and Jaisalmer is often described as the golden city. Today Jaisalmer is a popular tourist destination. Tourists come to Jaisalmer to walk along it's narrow lanes and admire the havelis and to see the imposing Jaisalmer fort perched high on a hill.

Jaisalmer is also the starting point for safaris into the Thar desert. A camel safari into the Thar desert is an experience not to be missed. After a day of riding on a camel you will realize just why camels are called the ships of the desert. The night-time desert sky is almost totally filled with stars and perfect for stargazing.
