Naini Tal Hill Station

An attractive hill station at 2000m above sea level in the Kumaon hills. The views of the Himalayas from nearby peaks are superb. Combing a trip to Naini Tal with a trip to Corbett national park is highly recommended.

Naini Tal, a town and district of British India, in the Kumaon division of the United Provinces. The town is 6400 ft. above sea-level. Pop. (1901) 7609. Naini Tal is a popular sanatorium for the residents in the plains, and the summer headquarters of the government of the province. It is situated on a lake, surrounded by high mountains, and is subject to landslides; a serious catastrophe of this kind occurred in September 1880. The approach from the plains is by the Rohilkhand and Kumaon railway from Bareilly, which has its terminus at Kathgodam, 22 m. distant by cart road. There are several European schools, besides barracks and convalescent depot for European soldiers.

Travel tips for Naini tal

Location: North-east of Delhi, north-west of Lucknow in northern Uttar Pradesh province. Kathgodam is the nearest railway station.

Getting there: Take a bus from Ramnagar (Corbett national park). Alternatively, take a train (timetable) to Kathgodam from Delhi or Lucknow and than a bus to Naini Tal.

Accommodation: Lots of options, choose a place with a lake-view.
Food: Lots of restaurants to choose from.
Costs: Good value in the off-season, mid-November to March excluding public holidays.

Good Points about Naini tal

Superb views of the Himalayas.
Go pony riding up to China peak.
Many good walks in the area, also other activities available such as a cable car ride to snow view or boating on the lake.

Bad Points about Naini tal

Comparatively expensive during the high season.
